MakitaComboKitWith the holidays coming on rapidly, you might be wondering what you can get that special person in your life this Thanksgiving and Christmas. How about something that they’ll use every day and will last for years? If your special person is someone who likes to dive in there and do it themselves, or works in construction, one of the many cordless power tools from WBC is something they’ll love. After all, few things are more rewarding than DIY and it’s only getting more popular; why spend all day behind a computer screen without actually doing something with your hands?

A man who works with his hands is a laborer; a man who works with his hands and his brain is a craftsman; but a man who works with his hands and his brain and his heart is an artist.

Louis Nizer

Like Nizer indicates, there is a reward in working with your hands. In in our day, one can even get rid of all the wires to free you up for the work at hand. So why unplug with a cordless power tool? Cordless power tools help you get the job done fast and efficient, and there’s no danger of tripping over a maze of extension cords (or being limited by the cord’s length). Plus, new technology has way reduced the problems that cordless power tools once suffered from: short battery run time, overall short life, reduced  power and poor torque are no longer issues. Even Apple Computer design guru Jony Ive says simplicity in design is what wins with real users. And he learned from his father.

My father was a very good craftsman. He made furniture, he made silverware and he had an incredible gift in terms of how you can make something yourself.

Jonathan Ive-Senior Vice President of Design at Apple

When buying cordless power tools, like any tools, go for value. The cheap ones are intended for very occasional use, say once a month. That’s fine for what they’re made for, but the pro ones are made to work hard with better ergonomics, more battery life, greater power, and better stamina. Standard 18V tools are the best; they last longer per charge. For the batteries, pick Li-Ion ones with decent amp/hour ratings (in other words, get the right size battery for the job) and pick smart chargers–they monitor the battery to charge it correctly and keep them cool, which extends battery life.

If you’re not sure what you need, you’re just getting started, or your tool set could use an overhaul, try a combo kit. If you want a specific tool, pick either a standalone tool with battery or a bare tool (cordless tool without battery). Still unsure or have old batteries? Get new ones–you always need at least two, unless you’re willing to take good-sized breaks waiting for your battery to charge!

Let the artist in you out. Design and make something with your own hands this weekend.
